As in a lot of countries, Italy enjoys football as its national sport. It is also one of the most successful countries in the world for football, its national team winning the FIFA World Cup four times (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006), and this is only one win below the most successful, which is Brazil. The Italian national team is certainly the most successful in Europe, their teams having won a staggering twenty seven European trophies.

Football goes back to the Roman Empire in Italy, when an ancient variant of the game called Harpastum was played. This game is thought to have influenced on other forms of the game throughout Europe due to the expansion of the Roman Empire. It was not until the 1880s that the modern version of the game was brought to Italy, and it is a topic of controversy as to which was the first Italian football club.

The first national competition is known, however, and was put together by the Italian Federation for Gymnastics in 1896; it was the S Udinese G. S. team from the region of Udine that won this. The same organisation set up a gymnastic-football tournament in 1897 and this time the victors were S. G. Torinese. The first fully national championship was organised in 1898 by the Federation of Italienne du Football (set up in the same year), and was distinctive because of its regional playoffs.

The Italian national team, known as Azzuri, is a result of this long history, and as was said above, they are the second most successful team in the world. This team were renowned in the 1970s to 1990s for their catenaccio technique, and as such they have been famed for having excellent defenders. The catenaccio is a technique involving an impenetrable backline of defence that stops any goals from being scored. It has been widely abandoned in current football.

Football in Italy is something the inhabitants are very proud of, and it’s a tradition that goes back centuries. The population of Italy take football very seriously, and that goes for all ages. Some think that football is something people can get involved in and trust in a society where faith in politics and the judiciary system is dwindling.

The Munster Football Final is the premier game in the Gaelic Football calendar in Munster. All six counties take part: Tipperary, Waterford, Limerick, Clare, Kerry and Cork. The teams play following an open draw and the two teams that win all their games progress to the final. The highlight of the year is a Kerry and Cork Final.

Kerry is the County with the most Munster Titles and Kerry GAA take great pride in the 73 titles won by The County. Winning the Munster Title bestows the honour of representing Munster in The All Ireland Series. It also means the team avoids the new back door system that gives another three games to the team that wants to progress to The All Ireland Final.

If Kerry plays Cork in The Munster Final the teams rotate venues. The highlight of the year is when both teams meet in the final. However they may also meet earlier in the series: first round, quarter final or semi final. The game if played earlier than the Final is always known as the real Munster Final as both teams play top class football.

Fitzgerald Stadium is an excellent venue to get to. It is within five minutes walking distance from the town centre. Anyone going to the game has a great choice in accommodation and restaurants as they wait for the game. The atmosphere in the streets before and after the game is electric and the banter between both set of fans adds to the occasion. Fans normally come to town on the night before the final and avail of the very competitive quality accommodation in the town.

The fans start drifting into the town on the Friday night before the game and on Sunday at 11.00am the streets are full. The fans wear their County colours Red and White for Cork and Green and Gold for the Kerry fans. This gives a carnival atmosphere to the streets and children love it. They get the opportunity to get dressed up in their hero’s jersey and see him in action on the field. The ultimate jersey to don on the day is the one with your hero’s number in big colours on the back.

Once the fans leave the streets to walk to the stadium the excitement builds. On the way one can buy a hat, flag or other memorabilia in your team’s colours. The banter between the fans is great and the cry of “Come on the Kingdom” rings around the stadium.

The curtain raiser to the Munster Senior Football Final is the Minor football final. It is an extra special day if both teams in the minor Final are from the two counties taking part in the senior Final. This adds to the crowd at the first game and showcases the talent coming up. Even if ones county does not win most fans are happy if they have seen an exceptional player for their County. This ensures they will have good players coming on stream every year.

When the two senior teams come on the pitch the roar of the crowd is magnificent. The game has not begun. Both set of fans expect to win. The cheers help fans relax. They settle down and wait for the game to begin.

Football fans visiting Killarney for the Munster Final can book Killarney Hotels or Killarney Bed and Breakfast at Stay in Kerry

The Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Florida Marlins and the Florida Panthers – if sports teams in the “big four” leagues (National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and National Hockey League) are your passion, Miami is one of the greatest locations in the country. In addition to the sun, sand, beauty and relaxation that are a part of the Miami lifestyle, sporting events are a very prominent part of the scene. They draw worldwide media attention and tourists from around the country to the Miami area. Let’s take a shortlook at the four major sports teams located in Miami.

    Basketball – Miami HEAT

The Miami Heat have been part of the NBA since their inception in 1988 and play within the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference. Having made the playoffs 13 times in the past 21 years has afforded the team a cache of respectability that was augmented by their 2006 NBA Finals victory over the Dallas Mavericks, taking the series by a score of 4 games to 6. The team did suffer through some difficult transitional periods, none more so than after their championship year in 2006. In 2008 the Miami Heat had the worst record in the entire NBA, but they did rebound out of the basement the following year. The summer of 2010 saw a major boost for the team with the triple signing of LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade, three star players who had previously played together on the gold medal winning US mens basketball team at the Beijing Olympics. Dubbed “the three kings” by Heat play-by-play man Eric Reid, the three players are expected to help shepherd the Miami Heat to dominance once again.

    Football – Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins came into the National Football League as an expansion team in 1965 and were actually the second professional sports franchise in Florida. The first was the ill-fated Miami Seahawks who only lasted one season before becoming defunct due to poor ticket sales and a difficult schedule. The name “Dolphins” was bestowed upon the team after 622 entries in a contest set-up to choose a name for the new team. After just 7 seasons in the NFL, the Dolphins won the Super Bowl in 1972 (*Super Bowl VII). They won it again the following year in 1973 (*Super Bowl VIII) as well. In addition to their two Super Bowl championships, they have also attained 5 conference championships,13 divisional championships and a total of 22 playoff appearances since 1970. In August 2010, the team launched its own regional TV network. The Dolphins Television Network comprises 10 South Florida TV stations that agreed to carry the team-produced coverage. Games are broadcast on the radio by the Miami Dolphins Radio Network of affiliated stations across Florida.

    Baseball – Florida Marlins

Established during the expansion of major league baseball in 1993, the Florida Marlins are a member of the Eastern Division in the National League. Despite their relatively short time as a professional baseball club, the Marlins have already won the World Series twice. The first time was in 1997 and more recently they captured the championship again in 2003. One distinction regarding their championship victories is that both times they won were also the only times they qualified for post season play. Another fact worth noting is that both times they qualified for the playoffs they did so as the National League wild card winner, they did not win first place in their division on either occasion. Home games are currently played at SunLife Stadium, which is also home to the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Football Team. In 2010 construction began on a new ballpark for the Florida Marlins within the city limits of Miami, on the site of the old Orange Bowl stadium. The ballpark is expected to open in 2012 and the team’s name is expected to be changed to the Miami Marlins.

    Ice Hockey – Florida Panthers

The Panthers came to be when the NHL expanded in 1993 to include the southern states of America (although the expansion was not exclusive to the southern states). H. Wayne Huizenga, then owner of the Blockbuster Video chain, was awarded an expansion franchise by the national hockey league and the team filled out their roster during the expansion draft in Quebec City. They reside in the South East Division of the Eastern Conference and play their home games at the Bank Atlantic Center. The Panthers had only been part of the NHL for a mere three seasons when they qualified for the playoffs with a record including 41 wins. The team went on to advance to each round defeating all their opponents on the way to their first and only, Stanley Cup Final. Despite defeating heavily favored opposition including the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins, they were unable to defeat the Colorado Avalanche, losing the series in four games.

Miami is also the home of many college sports teams. The two largest are the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Florida International University Golden Panthers. The Hurricanes football team formerly played at the Miami Orange Bowl from 1937 until 2008 when they mov to Sun Life Stadium. The Panthers football team play at FIU Stadium. There is also professional tennis, Jai Alai, and NASCAR to choose from in addition to the “big four” sports and college sports. Sports fans have a plethora of possibilities all year round in Miami, whatever your interest, there is a sports team for you!

If love sport and you love travel why not visit Melbourne? Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria in Australia, is the best location in the world to hold a sports event according to an industry analysis of sports cities globally, compiled by London-based consulting and research company ArkSports Limited. It has also gone on to win the title of “Ultimate Sports City” for the third time in a row.

Melbourne is really the place to be if you love sport. If offers an amazing range of facilities, buzzing crowds, gorgeous sunshine (well most of the time!) and superb venues.

Most people in Melbourne seem to have a unwavering dedication to sport and when here it’s easy to see why. The air is fresh and clean and the gorgeous summer climate seems to encourage a lot of activity.

Being healthy is very important to the average Australia and a culture of healthy good food and lots of activity has developed over the decades. The government has also played a big part in this. Each state in Australia has agencies responsible for sport and recreation policy and every area operates their own institutes and academies of sport.

Many popular spectator sports in Melbourne include soccer, Australian Rules football, rugby, cricket, tennis and motor sports, such as the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and the Australian round of the World 500 cc Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Melbourne prides itself on being a great city. It’s hardly surprising, with its spectacular combination of old and new architecture, elegant streetscapes, harmonious ethnic communities and lavish parks & gardens. It also boasts exceptionally friendly people.

The city centre is packed with bars, cafs and shops, quaint arcades alternated with nice green parks to flee Melbourne’s hustle and bustle. There is also the Queen Victoria Market, the place to go on Sunday for a bargain, or good cheap fruit and vegetable most days of the week.

Melbourne also has some interesting museums, tranquil landscaped gardens, some great offbeat festivals and of course the incredible Great Ocean Road is not too far away. For accommodation and more visitor information the Visit Melbourne site is very useful.

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine and will host the Euro 2012 Competition final. Throughout the competition, many supporters will descend on the city from most areas of Europe to be part of the action.

Kiev is a great city and tourist destination but it does suffer from a lack of hotel rooms. There are a small number of superb 5* hotels such as the Hyatt Regency, Radisson and Premier Palace together with a variety of 3* and 4* hotels, some dating back to Soviet times.

The problem is they are probably not going to have enough rooms for all the officals, media and supporters who will land in Kiev in the summer of 2012. This will naturally be a difficult situation but there is an excellent answer to the probleml.

All through the city are lots of flats which are available to let. There are a number of letting agents offering flats of many sizes and locations all over the city. There are plenty of advantages for choosing an flat as an alternative to a Kiev hotel.

Firstly, the service will be a great deal more personal with a letting agent than with a hotel. They are able to help you with all sorts of things such as airport taxis and excursions. Even the smallest apartments will be a lot more spacious than a hotel room. Most have internet connection which is very useful for the people travelling with a laptop.

The apartments also have good locations near the Kiev urban centre centre. The city’s underground system also will allow you to get around comfortably. There are enough small shops and supermarkets which means that food shopping is much cheaper than eating out every day as it is possible to prepare food in your apartments kitchen.

Flat costs will also work out much better value than hotels therefore on the whole, apartments should really be perceived as after planning your stay in Kiev in 2012.

Euro 2012 will be jointly hosted by Poland & Ukraine. The final will be played in Kiev and the shortage of hotels could be a problem to football supporters.

In 2004 the Crimson and Gray high school basketball team won the 2A Championship completing a 28-0 sweep of the competition. The Hoquiam city high school has a very rich history not only in sponsoring sporting events for local, state and nationals, but very uplifting victories and championships throughout its colorful record.

The long standing rivalry between Aberdeen and Hoquiam Grizzlies and what a rivalry it is, 100 years in total excluding this one the 101st became possible in 2006 when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) altered the enrollment limit for the 2A categorization permitting Aberdeen to drop to 2A along with other school s and creating another league. On October 14, 2006 the Grizzlies defeated with class the Aberdeen team 20 to 6 in classic tradition of football greatness.

One of the biggest events for Hoquiam and one of the most anticipated is the Grizzly Alumni Cross Country Invitational run. An event that thousand of participants hope and dream of joining not just because it is one of the most competitive running events if not the largest held in the west coast of Washington, but also the most pleasurable because of the sights and sounds that the city has to offer not only to the participants of the run but to the countless thousands who come to bear witness to the event and enjoy the natural beauty.

The great sporting town of Hoquiam does not run out of athletic events for locals and outsiders because it holds other competitions that promote camaraderie and sportsmanship in every man, woman and child, events like the Volleyball tournament and the much awaited action packed Alumni Wrestling tourney held every January. It also holds the internationally renowned Lumberjack competitions during the Logger’s Playday event held every September and is announced through the Logger’s parade which is part of the city’s logging heritage.

The residents from here and incidentally Aberdeen do not only expend their energy and time in proving their sports prowess through athletic meets, but also utilize much effort and service for the more needy of their communities, this is made possible by the annual “Food Ball” that is conducted to raise food supplies for distribution to the much more low-income families in the area. This demonstrates the actual reason why Hoquiam City and Aberdeen is so keen in sports, to foster friendship and community service.

The city has also been a home to some professional sporting teams, like the Western Baseball League’s Grays Harbor Gulls, which existed from 1995 to 1997. They called the historic Olympic Stadium their home, which incidentally is recognized in the National Registry of Historic Places. The grand Olympic Stadium is now the official home for the NAFL developmental football team the Grays Harbor Bearcats.

There are many notable Hoquiam High School Events that display the tenacity and love for sport by the town’s residents and their young folk. They have the annual Aberdeen/Hoquiam football game – which is more than 100 years old, played in the equally historic Olympic stadium. The annual Food Ball Drive – collecting for food banks for distribution to poorer families throughout Grays Harbor County, The Cross Country Invite – Biggest distance running event on Washington coast and the Wrestling Invite – largest wrestling tournament on Washington coast, and the Volleyball Invite held every September.

The State Championships won by Hoquiam throughout the last decades or so 2007 – Girls Wrestling, 2006 – Girls Fast pitch, 2004 – Boys Basketball, 1988 – Boys Wrestling, 1983 – Boys Track & Field, 1980 – Boys Baseball, 1942 – Boys Basketball, 1939 – Boys Basketball. The town residents have always been supportive not only of local sports but also of state and national athletics, which reflect the positive and competitive attitude of this small town with a big sporting heart.

Well, if the summer days are not sizzling enough in Dallas, there is only one thing that is certain to make them warmer – the cities beloved Cowboys!!!

Earlier this year, the National Football League released the upcoming seasons’ schedule for the ‘Boys in Blue and, at first glance, 2010’s seems to be the hardest yet. Not only are the Dallas Cowboys subjected to challenges in the hardest division in the NFL, they will have to play each and every one of those opponents twice. Their NFC East agenda alone is enough to make Jay Ratliff cry yet the brutality of it all doesn’t cease at that.

Over and above challenging their divisional opponents – the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia, and the NY “football” Giants – the Cowboys have improved the amount of competition when they host their Thanksgiving Day game, going head-to-head with the defending Super Bowl champ, the N.O. Saints.

Toss in an early-December road trip to Indianapolis and a battle with the Titans and you’ve got yourself a circumstance designed to call on you to play at a level much higher than the opposition – and to accomplish this on a continual basis.

In addition, the Cowboys were extended an early bye, in Week 4 before having to deal with a lengthy period which will put them up versus the Vikings, the squad that eliminated them from the playoffs last year (in a demoralizing manner at that), the Jags and the Green Bay Packers.

With 2009, the inaugural year of the brand new stadium behind them, the organization will need to rely more on technique and talent than the implied mojo of a cutting edge super-stadium in order to win football games and get to Super Bowl Xlv. Assuming they win and make it to the big game, they are going to be handsomely rewarded with a nice advantage as the upcoming year’s game is hosted at the Cowboys home stadium.

If they’re able to make it happen or not still remains to be seen.

For Cowboys fans that believe in their team, 2010 has the potential to become a season in which Dallas rises to the occasion – or, given the strength of their schedule, it can be a very long year. For followers vacationing to the stadium, we would really encourage you to take advantage of a Dallas Cowboys Game Package and get the complete Dallas Cowboys experience.

The BC Lions may have turned the corner after a disappointing 1-4 start to the CFL season. This past weekend, a clearly motivated Lions team defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 35-20 to improve to 2-4 in CFL play. The Roughriders dropped to 3-3 in the early going in the CFL season.

Lions defensive end Brent Johnson said that the motivation for this game was simple–his team was just plain sick of losing:

“We were sick of losing. That was our only option – to win tonight. This was the must wins of must wins.”

Johnson led a fearsome Lions defense with three QB sacks. Overall, the BC defense combined for five QB sacks and three interceptions.

Lions running back Martell Mallett caught one touchdown pass, ran for another and generally made himself a thorn in the side of the Riders defense all night. After the game, he praised the play of his offensive line:

“We just went out there and executed. The offensive line blocked well. I was just hitting the holes. They opened it for me and I got in it.”

BC starting QB Buck Pierce had been hearing some criticism from the Vancouver media suggesting that he lose his starting spot. His solid play in the victory may have turned down the heat for now:

“I was very proud of our offence tonight. “The way we stayed poised, the way we moved the ball. Running and throwing the ball, we were very good.”

His Saskatchewan counterpart Darian Durrant blamed the loss on his teams lack of execution:

“It was frustrating. B.C. gave us plenty of opportunities to put more points on the board. We just didn’t capitalize.”

Despite the satisfying victory, Lions coach Wally Buono realizes that his team still has plenty of work to do:

“We have to play much better football than what we did. I saw the intensity that you need, I see the resilience and I saw some guys make some plays.”

BC will travel east to play the struggling Toronto Argonauts. Saskatchewan will head home to face the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Edmonton Gains Sole Possession of First Place In CFL West With Win Over Stamps http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/eskimos-outlast-stampeders-in-wild-cfl-matchup/ http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/eskimos-outlast-stampeders-in-wild-cfl-matchup/#comments Thu, 29 Apr 2010 08:11:50 +0000 Ross Everett http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/eskimos-outlast-stampeders-in-wild-cfl-matchup/ Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.]]> The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23 yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds to play to earn the victory, erasing the lead that Calgary had earned with their own TD pass less than a half minute earlier. Edmonton improved to 4-3 with the win, while Calgary dropped to 3-4.

Winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed playing in the shootout:

“That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It’s great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It’s a great uplift for the team. It’s a huge win for us.”

With a bye week on deck, Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the outcome couldnt have been timed any better:

“Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It’s going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it’s a real bonus. It’s great for our confidence.”

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar game last year where Edmonton won by the same margin on a last play touchdown:

“They got us last year in this situation and of course you didn’t think it was going to happen again or even could happen again. It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn’t. And we had to stop Ray and we didn’t. Kudos to Edmonton.”

Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton. The two CFL provincial rivals from Alberta will face each other twice more this season.

Vikings Move To 4-0 With Win Over Packers http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/vikings-move-to-4-0-with-win-over-packers/ http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/vikings-move-to-4-0-with-win-over-packers/#comments Mon, 26 Apr 2010 09:50:14 +0000 Ross Everett http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/04/vikings-move-to-4-0-with-win-over-packers/ Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.]]> Brett Favre has been a large component of the Minnesota Vikings undefeated start the NFL regular season, and on Monday night he finally beat his old team, the Green Bay Packers. Favre passed for 271 yards and three touchdowns as the Vikings prevailed by a 30-23 final score. With the victory, Favre has now defeated all 32 NFL teams during his Hall of Fame career. The Vikings improved to 4-0, while the Packers dropped to 2-2.

The Vikings rewarded NFL betting enthusiasts by covering the spread as -4 home favorites. Minnesota is now 3-1 against the number, while the Packers loss evened their ATS record on the season at 2-2. The 53 points scored went OVER the posted total of 46.

Afterwards , Favre said that he didnt have any unusual emotions playing against his old team:

“I don’t know how to explain it. I felt right, but I guess I never thought I’d be in that situation.”

He had gone out of his way to downplay the significance of the matchup:

“My statement has been what I’ve done over my career. One game does not define my career good or bad. I know what I’ve done. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I know I can play. I wanted to do what it takes to win.”

Teammate Adrian Peterson said that the team understood the games importance:

“I definitely wanted to get this win for Brett. He downplayed it all week, but I just knew it meant a lot to him. I could see it in his eyes.”

Packers cornerback Charles Woodson gave credit to Favre, but then admitted that his team didnt help themselves with their effort:

“I don’t think there was any question what he could do when he came back. But you know, we didn’t do ourselves any justice.”

Favres replacement under center in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers, had a rough night. He was sacked eight times and threw an interception and after the game was critical of his performance:

“Below my expectations, definitely. To have three possessions where you’re in their territory and come away with zero points, two of them are directly related to mistakes by myself, that’s disappointing.”

Vikings coach Brad Childress was impressed with Favres poise in the face of all the media focus on playing his former team:

“You don’t want quarterback crying coming out of the locker room. He was great.”

The Vikings will your head to St. Louis to play one of the NFLs worst teams this weekend, the St. Louis Rams. Minnesota has been installed as a -10 favorite with the total set at 39. The Packers will take this weekend off before hosting the Detroit Lions on October 18th. Theyll play at Cleveland the following Sunday before a return date with the Vikings at Lambeau Field on November 1st.
