History of Kansas City Chiefs Football

The Kansas City Chiefs originated in Texas. The Chiefs originally started as the Dallas Texans in 1960 but in 1963 was moved to Kansas City and renamed the Chiefs. They were placed in the American Football League (AFL) but could not be the Texans anymore, so they were re-monikered the “Chiefs” after the mayor of Kansas City, Harold Bartle. Harold was a storied leader of the Boy Scouts of America with the nickname “Chief”.

Lamar Hunt’s Chiefs had success in the early years. Their first coach is a famous coach named Hank Stram who was brought over from the Dallas Texans during the move from Texas. The Chiefs won three early AFL League championships, coming in the years 1969, 1966 and 1962. It is Hunt who is credited with naming the “Superbowl” after watching his youngest daughter play with a popular toy of the time, the “Super Ball”.

Ultimate championship success has blessed the Chiefs only once in 1967, when they beat the Buffalo Bills 31-7 in a lopsided AFL Championship game. They eventually were defeated by the Packers in that year’s Superbowl. The Chiefs won their first Superbowl in 1970 by beating the Vikings 23-7 in a hard fought game. Sadly, this trip to the Superbowl has never been repeated.

The Chiefs have succeeded to make it past the first-round of the AFC divisional playoffs twice since their original Superbowl victory. They whooped the Oakland Raiders in the 1st round of the AFC championship game in 1991 to advance and eventually succumbed to the Buffalo Bills in January of 1992 in a battle for the AFC division title. In 1994 they defeated the Steelers in the 1st round and the Houston Oilers in the 2nd round, but got eliminated by the Buffalo Bills only one game away from making their 2nd Superbowl appearance in 1994. In the past decade, Kansas City has only made two post season appearances. Both attempts to advance were failures, with both defeats coming from the Indianapolis Colts in 2004 and again 2007.

When you are visiting Kansas City, Missouri, make it a point to watch a professional NFL game at the “Home of the Chief’s”, Arrowhead Stadium. Arrowhead is the 4th biggest NFL stadium by capacity, seating over 81,500 people. Be sure to wear red, as it is the Chiefs home colors! Go Chiefs!
