Since 1884, Portman Road was always the stadium for Ipswich Town Football Club who currently compete in the Championship in England. Not a very well know brand is Puma in the football field you may say. But there effort for recognition in through the world cup has really been outstanding. Their idea of love=football campaign got the attention of many viewers worldwide.

They launched 2 videos which were focused on the fans and their love for the game. This proved to be a real good step in Puma gaining some attention and eventually proved to be a good success. These videos were not too costly but made a huge profit for Puma.

The Christmas Truce of December 1914

On the outbreak of World War I in 1914, most believed it would be concluded by Christmas. Patriotic teenage men were keen to join the army as soon as possible as they presumed they would miss out on the action. However, history has confirmed that their confidence was misdirected as the war would not finish right up until 1918. The German advance was stopped at the 1st Battle of Marne and the drive for the sea started out as the Allies and Germans both dug in. It was the start of the trench warfare of the Western Front.

The end result was lines of trenches running from the North Sea to Switzerland along a 440 mile front. The battle lines moved very little as a battle of attrition broke out. Original trenches were not well built and were prone to cave in. Even by trench warfare standards, 1914 was pretty horrendous. As winter approached, the soldiers on the front line knew that the war would not be all over by Xmas after all.

The Western Front ran through both Belgium and France with infantry from France, Belgium and United Kingdom manning a range of areas. In some positions, the German trenches were no more than 30 yards away. Being in such close proximity allowed the soldiers to call to their opponents or even display signs. On the German belt buckles was the inscription “Gott Mitt Uns” (God is with us). The British reply was “We’ve got mittens too”. Some of the verbal exchanges were a bit more black humour. A volley of shots would bring the response “Missed” or “Right a bit”.

Even so, it was these exchanges that laid the foundations of a number of surprising moments along the Western Front on 24th December 1914. The Germans celebrate Xmas on the 24th as opposed to UK and France who celebrate on the 25th). The weather had improved a lot and on the 24th, the sounds from the German trenches were completely different. They began singing carols and put Christmas Trees on their trenches. Men started calling to each other and finally, some embarked into no mans land where they talked and exchanged cigarettes, food and souvenirs. Stories of the truce may differ as there were actually several truces throughout the lines. They were predominantly in the parts manned by the British as the Germans were occupying Belgium and French land so the Christmas spirit was less in evidence amongst these men.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 was unofficial but as many as 100,000 soldiers were thought to have been involved. As well as fraternisation, the chance was also taken to reclaim and bury the fallen. One of the most famous parts of the truce was the football match between the British and Germans. There are lots of conflicting tales concerning the match with an array of finals scores. The length of time the truce lasted also varied but generally, it was over on Xmas Day. Typically, hostilities started again by mutual understanding. In one case, on the morning of the 26th December 1914, Captain Stockwell of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers fired into the air and stood above the parapet. His opposite number in the German trench also stood up, they saluted and stepped down. Captain Stockwell heard the German fire a couple of shots into the air and World War I resumed. Of course, the Xmas Ceasefire was very much against the wishes of British commanders and in the subsequent years, artillery barrages were ordered for Christmas Eve.

In 2008, a plaque to the Christmas Truce on the Western Front was unveiled at the village on Frelinghen and was the 1st memorial to the incidents of Christmas 1914. The legacy the truce left behind is noteworthy with several books being penned and it was also the inspiration for many different songs.

In the Great War, fighting on the Western Front was horrific yet despite this, British and German soldiers still found time to be human for a short time in December 1914.

Trouble Spells For NFL As Owners And Players Hit A Deadlock

Are you a football fan? If so, you may be crying into your beer and pretzels come 2011. We’re looking at a good possibility for a strike, because of conflict between owners and players.

There’s a collective bargaining agreement in place currently, but the owners have decided to back out from it. An uncapped season is the first step toward strike, and this is being put in place for 2010-2011. Unless there’s an agreement, we’re going to see an NFL strike next year.

This potential strike has been triggered by the owners. They are no longer in favor of the agreement they have had with their players. Instead, they favor a rookie wage scale that will let them hold salaries for rookies down, in case their performance does not measure up to expectations.

Under the current system, rookies are paid outrageous sums even if they don’t live up to their hype. They often receive hugely lucrative guaranteed contracts, even though they may not perform up to expectations.

The overall pay scale in the NFL is also under attack by owners. Currently, players are entitled to 59.5% of the total revenues that the league brings in. Owners are not happy about this. They have to deal with falling revenues at the same time that they have to manage the rising costs of maintaining stadiums.

The owners also point out that they bear the cost of promotion and development of the league. Players don’t have to pay out for any of this, and only take profit.

Who knows if they will reach an agreement? It’s going to be a matter of wait and see. Regardless of how t his turns out, there’s a lot at stake. A lockout will put the brakes on NFL’s growing popularity. It will be interesting to see how players deal with being without pay for a year.

This fight could go either way. The NFL currently hopes to expand overseas, and is always trying to grow in the off season to further their revenue. If the current snarl ends in a strike, they can kiss hopes of overseas expansion goodbye.

For the third straight year, football fans enjoyed a competitive Super Bowl game that has often left fans disappointed after sitting through many blowouts in recent years.

The Indianapolis Colts were the team that was picked to win the game, but the New Orleans Saints really gave folks a surprise when they beat them. Drew Brees , along with the rest of the offense, played an outstanding game, but that’s not to say that their defense didn’t play just as well, doing a great job taking on Peyton Manning, the Colt’s quarterback.

So, let’s discuss down some of the highlights of Super Bowl XLIV. Perhaps you didn’t get to see the game; if that is the case, then these are the things that you would want to know about.

To begin with, although he started the game on shaky ground by only getting three completions from his first seven pass attempts, Drew Brees then went on to have a close to perfect game. He got 29 out of the next 32 attempts and finished the game with a total of 32 completions from 39 attempts, 2 touchdown passes, zero turnovers and 288 total yards.

Wow, those numbers are extraordinary and no one should be surprised that Brees came away with the award for that spectacular performance as a quarterback in the Super Bowl.

Let’s not take anything away from Garrett Hartley, the Saint’s young kicker. He attempted and made all three of his field goals from 44, 46 and 47 yards. These were vital in helping them to win, considering that they were losing to the Colts whenever he made two of them.

Lastly, there was a controversy that emerged after the game involving Peyton Manning. After losing the game to the Saints, the Indianapolis quarterback stormed off the field without shaking hands with or congratulating any of the New Orleans players.

It’s customary for the losing team’s players to congratulate the winners, so many are calling Manning’s act one of poor sportsmanship. Drew Brees, on the other hand, said that he understood Manning’s frustration and doesn’t hold anything against him for it.

Do Fantasy Sports Do More Bad Than Advantages?

One of my hobbies is playing fantasy sports leagues. I’ve playing for a while now and have fantasy teams in baseball, basketball and football. I’ve also tried other basic, sports based games.

I find this a very enjoyable hobby, and get a real buzz from managing my virtual team. Buying, selling, and being the boss gives me a lot of pleasure. I’ve always wanted to own a sports team and now I have 3, even if they aren’t real!

This is very rewarding, but rather addictive. As I am in 3 leagues, I seem to spend a helluva lot of time refreshing pages and checking league positions and games stats.

I’ve even watched matches that I couldn’t care less about just to see how it will affect my teams’ placings. I will also follow games for the same reason. There are some that actually wonder if it is harmless considering how addicted some players get.

A true sports fan loves a good competition where things are nip and tuck; it brings out our competitive nature. There are lots of positive things about playing these leagues, and like a real sport, they keep us occupied for the duration of the season.

I will admit to certain periods of obsession over how my players are performing and whether or not they have the best interests of the team at heart. This has often taken precedence over the actual results.

It’s my worst nightmare when my virtual teams are scheduled to play at the same time as my virtual teams. My long term loyalty to my real teams is being tested by those who aren’t real. This is quite disturbing to be honest.

I’m only one of millions who play these leagues and know how addictive they are. There are obviously some issues to be addressed there have been some furious debates regarding these leagues.

Many will tell you that the key to a football team’s success is its quarterback. After all, someone who can successfully find receivers is bound to put points on the scoreboard for his team. Still, others will tell you that it’s defense that wins championships. This year, though, was the year of the quarterback.

Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are believed by many to be the best two quarterbacks in football. Typically drafted before any others in fantasy leagues, the two of them are reliably consistent year in and year out, giving their teams the best offensive units in football. When they go head to head at this year’s Super Bowl, we’re going to see a battle of quarterbacks above all else.

These have both been great teams throughout the year. In fact, they were the last two teams to lose a regular season game and many were predicting undefeated years for both of them after they remained undefeated well into December.

Now, they have a chance to showcase their abilities once more in a game that is sure to result in a very high final score. This will be an offensive battle at its finest in Miami.

While both of them lost a few games during the last few weeks of the season, many would attribute this to the fact that they no longer needed to win more games in order to secure home field advantage.

Experts usually look at the defensive units when it comes to the Super Bowl. They say that defense wins championships, but neither of these quarterbacks seem to be hindered by an effective defense.

Recent champions have all resulted from highly proficient defenses and while both the Colts and Saints are efficient defensively, their defensive performances won’t matter much since each quarterback seems to be effective no matter what.

As a result, this year’s Super Bowl should be a classic battle that lives up to its expectations. Fans of the sport will be in for a treat, as the best two teams in football will be vying for the championship.
