The New York Jets rarely do anything of note these days – though their hiring of Brett Favre a couple of years ago did create a minor sensation, at least until that season fizzled out with a late-season rut that caused the team to once again miss the postseason. In fact, playoffs have seldom been kind to the Jets, and division titles have been even less so. When it comes to New York football success, fans in the city are advised to look to the Giants for inspiration. For a few years back in the late Sixties, however, the Jets were anything but an afterthought. That, or course, was the era of Joe Namath and the magnificence that was the third Super Bowl.

    Early years in the AFL

From 1960 until 1964 – the first few in the team’s history – the Jets had no real success. In an AFL that had never achieved the recognition of the National Football League, the Jets were among the lowest of the low. When Joe Namath arrived in 1965, fresh from his college career with Alabama, the team’s fortunes began to change. With a dazzling personality and aerial acrobatics on the field, the young Namath quickly gained Notoriety as Broadway Joe. His first real flash of brilliance came in the season of 1967, with four thousand passing yards that set a new mark for quarterbacks in the league. Given that football was a sport dominated by the running game in that day and age, three thousand yards was the gold standard of the time. That was also the year that his Jets team broke their own record for team success, winning eight games for the first time since their founding in 1960.

    Super Bowl dreams

The next campaign was even better, and smashed all of the Jets’ previous records. In a season with thirteen total wins, the team made the playoffs, narrowly defeated a very tough Oakland Raiders squad, and earned the right to play the NFL’s Baltimore Colts in that year’s NFL-AFL title match. It was the first time the game would be officially referred to as a “Super Bowl” – though it was later amended to Super Bowl III. The AFL’s lack of respect from football experts led to many dismissing them as just a speed bump in the Colts’ quest for a crown. The criticism of the Jets was intense, and eventually boiled over during Namath’s acceptance of an award honoring him as the outstanding player of the year. After a fan made light of his team’s chances, Namath vowed that he would lead his team to victory – in fact, he swore that he would “guarantee it”.

    The Boast made real

Super Bowl III was watched by more than seventy thousand fans. In the game, the great Johnny Unitas matched off against the brash Joe Namath in a contest that would prove to be anything but what the experts had anticipated. For all of three-plus quarters, the New York Jets kept the Colts off the scoreboard. In fact, by the time Baltimore managed to score, there were only a few minutes left in the game. Though Joe had not thrown a single touchdown in the game, and passed the ball not at all in the last period, his boast had been fulfilled.

When it comes to New York football success, fans in the city are advised to look to the Giants for inspiration. For a few years back in the late Sixties, however, the Jets were anything but an afterthought. That, or course, was the era of Joe Namath and the magnificence that was the third Super Bowl.

    The five year plan

From 1960 until 1964 – the first few in the team’s history – the Jets had no real success. In an AFL that had never achieved the recognition of the National Football League, the Jets were among the lowest of the low. When Joe Namath arrived in 1965, fresh from his college career with Alabama, the team’s fortunes began to change. With a dazzling personality and aerial acrobatics on the field, the young Namath quickly gained Notoriety as Broadway Joe. His first real flash of brilliance came in the season of 1967, with four thousand passing yards that set a new mark for quarterbacks in the league. That was also the year that his Jets team broke their own record for team success, winning eight games for the first time since their founding in 1960.

Sixty-Eight was super for a Bowl

1968 might have been a tumultuous year for the nation as a whole, but it was a banner year for the Jets. With Namath at the helm, the team won 13 of their 16 games. In the AFC Championship matchup with the Raiders, the Jets won an incredibly close contest and secured an appearance in the AFL-NFL title game that would later be known as Super Bowl III. The AFL’s reputation was so far below that of the NFL that few people gave the Jets even the remotest chance of winning the game. After listening to the critics continually disregard his team’s chances, Namath finally decided that he had enough while at a Player of the Year ceremony. In response to a Colts fan’s belittling of his chances, Namath boastfully guaranteed that his Jets would prevail in the game that was to be played only a few days in the future. Though he later swore that he had no intentions of making such a declaration, it has become part of NFL lore.

    Prophetic boast

Though many made light of his bragging, Namath’s words were put to the real test before a crowd of 75,000 fans a few days later. Against the legendary Johnny Unitas and the Colts, Namath threw not a single touchdown passes, and the Jets did nothing but run the ball in the fourth quarter. In fact, the only thing that he and his teammates did during that game was dominate and control the Colts, who were heavily favored to win the game. The Colts only scored in the closing minutes of the game and lost to the Jets by a final tally of sixteen to seven.

Giants In The Age Of Eli http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/06/giants-in-the-age-of-eli/ http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/06/giants-in-the-age-of-eli/#comments Sun, 06 Jun 2010 17:28:57 +0000 Freddie Brister http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/06/giants-in-the-age-of-eli/ Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.]]> There is no arguing with the fact that the New York Giants have been one of the most storied franchises in professional football. Now eighty-five years old, the team remains in the top echelon of NFL teams. They have been crowned the champions of the NFL on seven occasions, and have three Super Bowl trophies to their credit. That title total is the third highest in all of the NFL, with only the Bears’ nine and the Packers’ twelve being above them. The team’s last Super Bowl victory occurred in the wake of the 2007 campaign, and was engineered by the able quarterback Eli Manning.

How do you get to New York?

As most fans know, Eli’s older brother Peyton is the quarterback of the Colts. Like his brother, Eli was a star player in college. By the time he graduated, his stock was so high that he ended up being the number one pick of the 2004 draft. Everyone knew that the Chargers of San Diego were certain to select Eli since the team needed a field general. Manning had cast doubt on the situation by declaring that he would not take the field if drafted by San Diego, however, so what would happen on Draft day was anybody’s guess. In the end, however, a last-minute series of trades with the Giants allowed San Diego to pick Eli with their number one selection, and trade him immediately to the Giants for Philip Rivers. Thus, thorough an arguably bizarre set of circumstances, Eli ended up in a Giant’s jersey.

Fresh blood and a fresh start

When Manning arrived in New York, the Giants had not won a Super Bowl since 1990. Worse, the franchise was still stinging from its loss to the Baltimore Ravens in 2001’s Super Bowl XXXV. Since that Super Bowl loss, the team had been in need of a new direction. The arrival of a new coach in 2004 coincided with the trade for Manning in what the Giants franchise hoped would be a cloning of the success that Eli’s brother Peyton had been having with the Colts for more than a decade. As it turns out, the arrival of Eli did see a turnabout in the team’s fortunes as they went to the playoffs in each of the next three seasons. The 2007 campaign saw them once again back in the biggest game of all, representing the NFC in Super Bowl XLII.

    Against all odds

When the forty-second Super Bowl got under way in Glendale, Arizona, the Giants were heavy underdogs. In fact, the odds makers predicted that the then-undefeated Patriots would cruise to an easy eighteen-plus point victory. Eli Manning, who had long suffered from unfair comparisons to his brother Peyton, led his Giants team to a seventeen to fourteen victory in the game, however, and equaled his brother’s achievement of one Super Bowl ring. The final come-from behind drive of the game made Eli the first quarterback in the history of the Super Bowl to throw a game-winning touchdown in the final minute of play.

A 2014 Superbowl in New York sounds like a excellent concept……on paper. We should think about it for a minute. Excellent folks, wonderful town, excellent weather? Do People know how cold Winter is in New York? Typically the Superbowl is surrounded by outdoor Venues in the sunshine, concerts outside the stadium, barbecues in the parking lot, sports figures playing golf, and fans unwinding poolside while on holiday to watch the big game. New York is a superb metropolis but there are tremendous factors for having it in a warm weather location.

Some of the significant underlying factors the Superbowl is intended to be competed in a relaxing location is for the spectators. Folks like to be comfortable and enjoy themselves in a great setting. It’s certainly not just regarding the game, it’s related to relationships, events, sportsmanship as well as family. It is a period to display to your children the best way to play football and a great time to be an American. It really is remarkable what warm temperature can do. Most people are aware that the more people spend money the greater the city benefits, the state benefits, and the country progresses.

Let us not forget that there is a football game that will be played as well. The Superbowl’s true purpose for being competed in a nice weather setting from the beginning was for an even game. The NFL originally sought the game to be played in a location in which is neutral fan wise but also had superb conditions so both coaches and teams could execute their extremely best.

Looking at it in a different way, some of the finest games in NFL history have been competed in terrible conditions. Certainly, there have been games in Green Bay below zero temperature, snow in New England that was incredible, and fog in Buffalo that was outstanding. Bad weather is what the fans at home would actually like to watch.

New York in February is quit beautiful but there is not only a great chance of rain or snow, there is a great risk of losing money. Maybe the people of New York can pull off a great upset and prove us wrong. We all know that no other city deserves it more.

Say Goodbye to Giants Stadium http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/01/say-goodbye-to-giants-stadium/ http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/01/say-goodbye-to-giants-stadium/#comments Fri, 15 Jan 2010 16:16:18 +0000 Matt Ryan http://www.footballfansworld.net/2010/01/say-goodbye-to-giants-stadium/ Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.]]> Beginning with the season opener against Washington, the Giants appear to be playing the same schedule that they did in the ‘08 – ‘09 season. Not only will they be playing all three of their NFC East rivals during weeks- through 15, but they will be hosting the games against the Eagles and the Panthers. These are just a few of the highlights Giants fans can look forward to this year, even if it is the same as it was last season, the details of the games will be different.

The two weeks of preseason practices and games made it appear, to the fans and coaches, that the Giants had an unbreakable defense this year. Upon winning their first preseason game, against the Panthers, this would prove to be true; the Giants defense is strong and other teams should be prepared.

Coach Tom Coughlin plays a big role in the strength of the Giants this year. He was asked, during preseason, who he believed were his strongest players this year. While he gave kudos to a number of players, mostly on the defensive line, Sintim, Leger Dougable, Bruce Johnson, and Tommie Hill were at the top of the list.

The ‘09 season will be nothing short of memorable for fans, staff, and team members. They started with the amazing win of their first preseason game, along with the return of a great receiver – David Tyree. Tyree suffered a severe knee injury shortly after Super Bowl XLII, and had to sit on the sidelines during the ‘08 season. This put the team in a bit of bind, forcing them to find new talent, which they did.

Tyree, despite of the threat of new blood on the team, appears to be confident with his position on the team. He is promising his team, and fans, that he will perform as he did prior to his injury, and that they have nothing to fear. He believes he is valuable to the Giants, and if they do not see that, that he will be just as valuable to any other team in the NFL.

All of this said, Tyree missing an entire season, should not affect the team or how he plays. According to him, if the team is affected, it is not due to his lack of skill as he believes the injury has not harmed his abilities to perform. The first preseason game would prove this to be true, but there is still a whole season for him to play.

This season, 2009, is the Giants’ 85th anniversary in the NFL. This being said, it is also the last season they will play in their current stadium. Beginning in the 2010 season, the Giants will share a stadium with the Jets; they will play in the Meadowlands Stadium. Fans, loyal or not, this is your last chance to see the Giants play in their stadium.

This season brings a lot of excitement for fans across the world. Old players back on the field, anniversary, and closure on a part of the team. StubPass.com has all of the information, necessary, for upcoming games and events. This is the time to get into the stadium before its time to say goodbye.
