It was a game between Crespi and St.Bonaventure last Friday. I was with a friend watching the game. The story he shared with me was stunningly inspiring and I have never come across another great recruiting story like it. It really changed my perception about the college recruiting process and how one can win in this abstract process of recruiting.

There was a STUD RB back in Southern California who suddenly interested my friend because coaches were not ready to consider him at all because he did not possess any great credentials. They just measured his not-so-inspiring physical attributes like height and weight and thought that he was not fit to represent the college. They could not see what was in his heart. They did not know the stamina and endurace of his will.

His physical attributes convinced them that he could not play for the school. So my friend started coaching him on how to promote himself. They made an online video on his profile and emailed all the coaches to view the video. The key point in this story was whenever the emails were sent to the coaches, the subject line of the emails contained a unique line such as:

SUBJECT: “I am the Running Back YOU need”…; “Running Back to help YOUR program”; “CA Star RB to help your program”

Essentially, he was using subject lines that would peak the coaches interest, get them to open the email and then he would instruct the coach to check out his online profile.

***One key tactic he used is that he put his ONLINE PROFILE link in the signature of ALL of his emails…you never know who may end up seeing it!

In other words, this young lad knew the trick of the trade that he had to do a PR job by suitably empowering his recruiting campaign with PR components. He also got in touch with important people at Scout.com and tried to promote himself. When the hype around him heated up, he succeeded in getting his first offer. Within a few weeks, the number of offers went up to 8 D1 offers. He utilized the first offer for revisiting the other coaches in whom the first offer triggered considerable interest.

It is a human tendency to want to have what you can’t have. This same human tendency is what made other coaches extend an offer to this young man. He visited North Carolina with his family and called up all the coaches of major colleges to inform them that he was local, and he wanted to meet them. Once he met them, he showed them his video profile. In the evening, as many as four offers were extended to him.

So let me inspire you on HOW to go from 0-8 D1 offers in a matter of a few weeks (of course you gotta be able to play!):

1. BE HUNGRY and STAY HUNGRY – YOU will only go through this process once, so make the most of it!

2. You should promote yourself using all possible means. Sometimes PR works most effectively.

3. You should ensure that people watch your profile video and hence it is better to carry DVD’s with you. Treat your DVD’s like your business card.

This past Wednesday I did a fantastic recruiting panel at Brentwood high school with former Princeton and pro baseball player Stephen Young, women’s head basketball coach at Occidental College Heidi VanDerveer, and UCLA compliance coordinator Dan Goldberg. We spoke about different aspects of the college recruiting process, and the one thing the Brentwood athletic director asked me to discuss is the College Recruiting Game Plan.

There are 3 keys to your College Recruiting Game Plan:

TIMELINE – When to promote?

One of the top questions parents ask me is, “When should I start promoting my student-athlete to colleges?” I always tell the parents the best time to start promoting yourself to college coaches is when you have quality varsity video. Once you have quality varsity video, then it is the BEST time to start promoting yourself to college coaches, so they can see you compete against top talent.

TOOLS NEEDED

The second thing you need for a successful recruiting game plan are the right tools. You will need an athletic resume, an official transcript, and a quality highlight video. If you can think of this process as being similar to getting a job, it will help you to effectively understand the use of each tool. Your transcript is very important because more and more schools are putting more emphasis on the academic aspect of recruiting. Your highlight video is also an imperative tool. A coach cannot effectively recruit you if they are unable to watch you play.

TAKE CHARGE – PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE

The third thing you will need, and what I believe to be the most important step in the college recruiting process is to PROMOTE yourself to college coaches. If coaches do not know about you, then they cannot effectively recruit you. Be sure to send your TOOLS out to colleges that seem to be an ideal fit for you.

Every university across the country uses a recruiting board to evaluate their current recruits. A lot of coaches use either a number system or grades to score their prospects. For example, Coach Saban at Alabama uses a number system to grade his recruits. All of his top recruits receive a number 1 for their height, weight and speed.

The reason you want to know where you stand on the recruiting board is because a lot of coaches will tell you that you are their number one recruit when in FACT YOU ARE NOT. Why would they lie to a 17 or 18 year old? Because they want to keep you excited about their school…they want you to believe that you are their number one recruit.

By knowing where you stand on a coaches recruiting board will give you GREAT knowledge and power with other schools that are recruiting. What it means to be a number 2 or 3 recruit is that if their number 1 guy does not accept their offer then you are next in line.

If they tell you that you are their number one recruit, then you should quickly start talking about official recruiting visits and/or offers to their school. If a coach starts tripping over his tongue, then you know that you are not really their number one recruit.

Another great question to ask a college coach, is to find out what would have to happen for you to be their number one recruit at your position. You will get all kinds of different answers to this question, and again it may give you very valuable information to empower you during the recruiting process.

There are other great questions to ask college coaches, and you can learn more of them by watching the video in this article.

Have you scheduled all 5 of your official recruiting visits? It is important as you begin to schedule your official visits that you keep in mind that these are business trips. I know there are a lot of stories out there about how much FUN your recruiting visits are and don’t get me wrong they are A TON of fun, but it is critical that you approach them as a business trip.

When I took my recruiting trip to Stanford my senior year, I had a blast! I had a chance to meet OUTSTANIDNG players from all over the country. I was teamed up with a great guy on the team to show me around campus, classes, and introduce me to the Palo Alto area. We went out to an AMAZING restaurant in Palo Alto. There was about 20 of us in the restaurant chowing down…I am glad I didnt have to pay that bill In the midst of all my fun, I made sure that I kept my wits, and I approached my visit as a business trip.

Why is this important?

Well there are several reasons why you want to treat your visit like a business trip. On your visit, the coach is going to team you up with a current player on the team…what do you think the first thing a coach does once you leave campus to go back home? He calls the player he teamed you up with into his office and starts interviewing him about you. The coach asks the current player:

Do you think he would fit into our program?

Did you have any problems with him this weekend?

How did he behave when you were out and about?

These are obviously just a few questions a coach will ask your host…and bottom line he wants to get a feel for you as a student-athlete. Most importantly he wants to know if you will be a positive contribution to the program.

4 things to keep in mind for your recruiting trip:

1. PREPARE: Write down all your questions before your trip, so when you get on campus you are prepared to get your questions answered.

2. ALWAYS do the right thing when you are on campus. Your host may take you to places that will put you in tempting situations. DO NOT take the bait…keep your head on straight and do the right thing.

3. Visit with as many current players as possible. They will be able to give you a GREAT feel of the college and its program.

4. Talk to as many student on campus as possible as well. Get a feel for what it is like to be
