Carlo Ancelotti has urged his Chelsea troops to build on their impressive 2-0 defeat of FC Copenhagen away from home in the Champions League this week. The Italian is keen for the beleaguered Blues to use the momentum harnessed by the victory to improve further as next week’s Premier League clash against league leaders Manchester United grows ever nearer.

Chelsea proved their critics wrong in Copenhagen with a professional, if not spectacular, performance that saw Nicolas Anelka score a double and Petr Cech make a series of important saves at crucial times in the tie. Frank Lampard also displayed a performance of real merit, with his neat reverse pass for the French striker’s second goal of the game a touch of class in a match otherwise characterised by hard work and determination.

FC Copenhagen will travel over to London to play at what is sure to be a full to bursting and noisy Stamford Bridge three weeks from now for the second leg of the European tie but Chelsea are widely expected to qualify for the quarter-final stages of the Champions League in a season that has so far proved to be nothing less than a bitter disappointment.

With the Premier League title now firmly out of their reach, Ancelotti nevertheless wants Chelsea to boost their chances of a top four finish this season. Spurs and Manchester City both have high hopes of finishing in the top four along with Arsenal and United this season, so Chelsea will have a real fight on their hands to ensure they end the campaign strongly and don’t slip out of the Champions League qualification places.

United will provide a real test of just how far the side has come following a devastatingly poor few months in all competitions (the Champions League being the clear exception) but Blues fans will perhaps know better than to put their trust in what could turn out to be just another false dawn for their aging side.

Arsenal may have sent the bookmakers a real shock last week when they defeated Barcelona 2-1 on home soil at the Emirates, but the question now remains as to whether they can do the same against the Spanish champions in the place where so many have tried, and failed, to play the Spaniards at their own game.

Away from home in the Champions League, Barcelona aren’t exactly consistent. The Spaniards instead quite clearly prefer to dominate at home in order to make up for their slight deficiencies away from the Nou Camp, so the Gunners should expect Barcelona to enjoy plenty of possession whilst playing their tricky little triangles around Arsenal without even looking like they’re that bothered.

Having said that, Arsenal would seem now to have the fighting spirit and battling determination to succeed and taste glory that some believe has not been present over recent years. Arsenal have the skills and talent in abundance that is needed to be the best but that psychological edge that hands top teams in both domestic competition and Europe such an advantage seemed to be lacking in Arsene Wenger’s men.

With Barcelona not looking themselves in La Liga over the last week or two, with the weekend’s result a case in point despite the eventual securing of all three points, there has arguably never been a better time for Wenger’s men to prove that an attacking football philosophy really can result in trophies.

However, that famous saying that there is no score more dangerous in knock-out competition, where away goals count as double, than a 2-1 scoreline needs to be respected. Arsenal don’t know how to sit back and protect a one goal lead, but might they be tempted to try to do just that in such exceptional circumstances, and circumstances that could prove ultimately so fruitful and glorious?

Let’s just imagine for a second that Barcelona score an early goal in the game. There would be little doubt in that scenario that the advantage would be right back in the Spaniards’ court. However, on the other hand, if Arsenal can find the back of the net in the first half hour without any reply, the expectant Barcelona fans will surely not hold back in getting on their players’ backs. The Nou Camp can be an extremely intimidating environment for visiting teams but it can also be a cauldron for the Barca players if they aren’t providing the level of entertainment that is usually on display in the Catalan city.

Whatever the final scoreline happens to be, it’s sure to be a classic tie, and who knows, the winner of this tie could well be the team that ends up lifting the trophy in Wembley in a few months.

Arsenal are still in with a decent chance of winning four trophies this season, but the next two weeks will undoubtedly prove crucial when it comes to assessing just how far the side has come after a period of five years that has been nothing short of frustrating for all involved with the North London side.

This coming Sunday’s Carling Cup final between Arsenal and Birmingham City could prove to be the most crucial tie of all that the Gunners have to play in the next fortnight, despite the fixture congestion that has left them with game after game on the horizon. If Birmingham end up losing, it won’t be the end of the world for the Blues fans, with progression into the quarter-finals of this season’s FA Cup a positive sign for the Blues. If, however, Arsenal lose Sunday’s game, the repercussions could be far-stretching with Barcelona waiting for them at the Nou Camp.

The Atlanta Falcons are off to a fast start this season, and on Sunday used a potent offensive attack to top the Carolina Panthers 28-20 at the Georgia Dome. QB Matt Ryan threw a career high three touchdown passes, including one to his new favorite receiver Tony Gonzalez. Beleaguered Carolina QB Jake Delhomme threw another interception for ten in his previous three games (including last years playoff loss to Arizona) but was otherwise much more effective passing for 308 yards and a touchdown.

NFL football betting devotees who invested in the Falcons as -6 home favorites were rewarded with the pointspread cover. The Falcons have won and covered both games this season for a 2-0 record both straight up and against the spread. The Panthers, meanwhile, have dropped both of their 2009 contests straight up and to the number. The 48 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 42.

The Panthers will head to Dallas for a game against the Cowboys next Monday night. Carolina is a +9 road underdog in that contest with the total set at 46. Theyll enjoy a bye week before returning to action at home against the Washington Redskins on October 11th. Atlanta has a pair of tough road games on the docket, beginning this weekend against the New England Patriots at Foxboro, Massachusetts. The Falcons have been installed as +4 road underdogs with the total set at 44. Theyll have a week off before a game that doesnt look quite so easy any more, heading cross country to play the resurgent San Francisco 49ers on October 11th.
