    Sports brand Adidas have recently released a range of fitness accessories called ‘miCoach’ which monitor heart rate, distance and speed when running. Unlike usual heart rate monitors, the data is not just displayed on a watch; instead they pair with software downloadable for free for all smartphones.

    The miCoach gadgets separate themselves from the popular Nike+ pedometer by not pairing exclusively with Apple technology, although the software for the iPhone is likely to be the most popular. The devices will also pair with an array of mp3 players and hardware.

    Rather than charging a high price for the software, it is free to download from app stores and the website; this will most likely prove popular as it incorporates GPS enabled smartphones to allow fitness training without purchasing the hardware.

    Although the software can be used alone, the addition of heart rate and footfall are much more effective in performance analysis, meaning an incentive to buy the full price gear.

    The software in the app analyses data from the GPS, heart rate and footfall to determine how effective your training is, it will provide on the go feedback from a pre-recorded voice that can instruct you to pick up the pace, relax a little and will direct you through a predetermined, personalised training schedule.

    Adidas have released the products in a bid to compete with rivals Nike over their Nike+ products. The Nike+ is much cheaper but has limited functions and only provides a basic analysis. The miCoach provides one of the most in depth analyses of any personal training device, data can be uploaded to an online database to track your progress and provide useful feedback.

    If you want to prove how fit you are to your peers, there is an ability to upload data to Facebook. The results can be streamed wirelessly on the go so your friends can track where you are and how fast you have been running. Adidas hopes this will encourage users to train harder as they will feel the pressure of their friend’s judgement.

    Due to their sponsorship of some very large footballing names, some stores are offering discounted miCoach equipment with the purchase of a pair of Adidas Predators and Manchester United Football Shirts.

    Just like the team goal needs to be made very clear, every player must know just as clearly what their duty is. Make sure there are no ambiguities with this step. If there are, when players get on the field it may often result in chaos. On the other hand, when everyone knows what is expected of them this will make for a smoother game. Just as important as all of these rules is giving credit when it is due. Make sure that all team member contributions are recognized.

    Is there a sense of mutual respect among team players and the coaching staff? When you are playing and learning with people you respect, you are more likely to work harder. You admire them so you probably do not want to let them down. This is all true in the sports arena as well.

    What kind of team image reflects the members of the team? This is crucial in understanding how the actions of a single individual impacts an entire team. Is the image positive and healthy? Or is it a reckless image? Team members have to understand that they are in power of the image they create for the world to absorb.

    The team goal should be a priority for any athletic team. The vision is always clear, and all individuals put in their best to achieve this goal. This is applicable to Cougar football and beyond. Make sure that every person apart of the group understands their role, and just how important it is to the success of the team.

    While the World Cup this year may end up being the most watched event in the history of television (estimates say 800 million people are watching), I have found the tournament so far disappointing. What happened to all the goals? Here are some theories.

    I’ll preface this by saying I am a big soccer fan. I want the sport to thrive and hopefully it will catch on in the United States some day. It is just hard to watch when most of these games end with one goal scored.

    A new ball, called the Jabulani, was introduced for this year’s World Cup. It is supposed to bend more unpredictably than previous balls, however maybe its possible that its hurting the players goal scoring opportunities more than it is helping it.

    There’s no doubt that part of the “problem” is defenses have been playing very well. Communication on the defensive end has been improved for most teams.

    Is it possible that the vuvuzelas, also known as the terrible noise making horns, are distracting the players? As an American watch the game, I know it is distracting me.

    Since it is technically winter in South Africa right now, temperatures have dropped. Certain star players have been seen wearing long sleeved shirts and you can visibly see people exhaling air. Maybe the conditions aren’t what most of the players are used to.

    There have been a few shining moments in the tournament so far, however. The United States and South Africa both showed up in their first games, tying the favorites England and Mexico, respectively.

    Unfortunately for the host country, they most likely will not see the second round. At the time this article is written, South Africa will have to beat France by a considerable margin in order to keep their tournament hopes alive. At least the country is bringing in money.
