Fans of college football know all too well the quality of the teams that the University of Miami football program has fielded in the last several decades. Though the program had not won a national championship for most of its eighty-four year history, the early 1980s saw a change in fortunes that has lasted into recent years. The five championships won by Miami teams since 1983 (the Associated Press awarded them the title in 1984, with another four titles awarded through 2002) are bested only by the programs at three other schools. With two winners of the Heisman Trophy in their history, the Hurricanes have had an impact both as a team and in personal bests. Their 58 consecutive home wins was an NCAA record that no team has managed to surpass.

With more than 650 wins to the program’s credit and fewer than 450 losses, the program ranks in the top 25 of the NCAA when it comes to the best winning percentage. And though they have yet to win a conference title since moving into the Southeastern Conference, the Razorbacks did win a total of 13 conference championships while a member of the old Southwest Conference. Seven of those championships came during the tenure of John “Frank” Broyles, who served as coach for the Hogs from 1958 until 1976.

With thirteen national titles and eight AP or Coaches consensus championships to its credit, the Alabama program has consistently remained among the elite of NCAA football powers. Nearly half of the program’s national championships were earned during the tenure of one Alabama coach – the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant, who coached Alabama teams from 1957 until his retirement after the 1982 season.

Well it is another season for the Detroit tigers and that can only mean one thing, another season of so close yet so far. Let’s face it the football team sucks, the basketball team sucks, and the hockey team is barely hanging on. This leaves the hope for a successful sports season in Detroit in the hands of the Tigers, this is as good of an idea as leaving a child with a hammer and anvil. The Tigers are not a bad baseball team, they are just not a good one.
