NFL Signs Football Deal With Nike

Nike has become the latest sports brand to take on the uniforms and fan apparel of the National Football League (NFL) in America. Rivals Reebok, who have worked in collaboration with the NFL for the past decade will not have their contract renewed when it ends in 2012.

Nike’s swoosh logo will feature on the pitch along with six other apparel partners. The NFL announced the companies in Chicago this month as New Era who will provide on-pitch headwear as well as fan caps and clothes. Other suppliers clung on to their contracts and will continue producing merchandise from headwear to kid’s clothes. The bid did not come as a shock to sports giant Reebok, however, as an executive told journalists that he was not concerned of damage to the company if the bid was lost.

Reebok have held the uniform rights for the past decade. A statement issued by the brand said that they had enjoyed their partnership with the NFL and revealed that NFL licensed sales had more than doubled during its partnership with the League. Adidas, who own Reebok, also hold the uniform rights to the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Soccer, making them probably the most powerful brand in contemporary sport. Nikes new contract is expected to last for 5 years.

It is Nike’s massive prevalence on the football pitch that has probably earned them the contract. They feature heavily in break time adverts during the football and are already the official brand of football gloves on the pitch. Deals with individual players have also raised the status of the sports giant in the realm of American Football.

It is currently unknown how much Nike stands to profit from the deal, but unofficial estimates suggest they expect to profit by $350 million in apparel revenue. The President of the Nike brand, Charlie Denson, said in a statement that they believe the agreement with the NFL “enhances the Nike brand, and provides a significant opportunity to drive growth across the business”.

Steven Gerrard Launches Adidas AdiStars Campaign

In the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Addidas have launched a new initiative to inspire the participation of the UKs youths in sport. AdiStars is a community based game which aims to increase sporting activity by rewarding sustained activity. The brand will launch AdiStars in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust (YST).

In a spectacular launch at one of Liverpool’s inner city schools, Steven Gerrard played basketball with pupils and offered them inspirational advice on becoming a sports star. The Liverpool FC and England Captain was joined by Paralympic bronze medal winner John McFall on the 23rd September at St Margaret’s Church of England High School. He told them to “enjoy sport” as part of a healthy lifestyle, and for those serious about making it as a sports star in the competitive world he advised hard work, sacrifices and dedication.

By tapping into the popular gaming culture, the digitally based sports challenge aims encourages young people aged from 13 to 19 to connect with each other online through sporting missions. Missions on AdiStars relate to 5 powers that must be mastered – speed, strength, skill, stamina and suppleness – with activities ranging from basketball, football and tennis, to running, hockey and weight-lifting.

As each challenge is completed they will be credited with small rewards such as virtual badges. Unlike usual heart rate monitors, the data is not just displayed on a watch; instead they pair with software downloadable for free for all smartphones.

The miCoach gadgets separate themselves from the popular Nike+ pedometer by not pairing exclusively with Apple technology, although the software for the iPhone is likely to be the most popular. The devices will also pair with an array of mp3 players and hardware.

Rather than charging a high price for the software, it is free to download from app stores and the website; this will most likely prove popular as it incorporates GPS enabled smartphones to allow fitness training without purchasing the hardware.

The software in the app analyses data from the GPS, heart rate and footfall to determine how effective your training is, it will provide on the go feedback from a pre-recorded voice that can instruct you to pick up the pace, relax a little and will direct you through a predetermined, personalised training schedule.

Adidas have released the products in a bid to compete with rivals Nike over their Nike+ products. The Nike+ is much cheaper but has limited functions and only provides a basic analysis. The miCoach provides one of the most in depth analyses of any personal training device, data can be uploaded to an online database to track your progress and provide useful feedback.

If you want to prove how fit you are to your peers, there is an ability to upload data to Facebook. The results can be streamed wirelessly on the go so your friends can track where you are and how fast you have been running. Adidas hopes this will encourage users to train harder as they will feel the pressure of their friend’s judgement.
