Will Solar Powered Sports Stadiums Become A New Trend?

Everyone seems to be gearing up for football season. As people prepare for the NFL’s 91st football season and all of the craziness that will ensue, there is more going on behind the scenes than they realize. This football season we will see yet another football team going green.

That’s right, this season the Arizona Cardinals home stadium will be powered by 100 percent clean and renewable energy. Football games are massive events that require a great amount of energy to power. The stadium lights, parking lot lights, concession stands, scoreboards, and more all need to be powered.

Perhaps there will be even more for fans to cheer about if more teams start playing in stadiums powered by renewable energy. As of now, the Arizona Cardinals are one of only a few teams who will be playing in a green stadium. Yet, this slowly moving trend does seem to be expanding its reach and other teams may follow the Cardinals’ example in the future. In addition to this, it is an example to all business and homeowners that it is time that we all do our part to create a better environment.

The University of Phoenix teamed up with SRP who will be providing the Cardinals’ home stadium with 1,135,000 kilowatt-hours of energy for the season. This amount of energy will power all 10 of the Arizona Cardinals planned home games. It is a ton of energy–approximately equivalent to about the amount of energy that 60 homes would use in the entire course of a year.

The University of Phoenix has gone green a few times in the past, but this year they decided to make an even bigger commitment to create a positive impact on the environment. The university powered the stadium twice with renewable energy in 2008. Once it was to power the stadium for Super Bowl XLII, and the other time it was to power a home game against the San Francisco 49ers–who are also one of a few teams with a green home stadium.
