The Texas Longhorns Are Under-Manned But Coach Shows No Worries

The Texas Longhorns went into their fall practice camps with plenty of mending to do. The total number of losses that the team has experienced is 18. Many of them played key and important positions in the game play of the Longhorns. To name a few, we have QB. Colt McCoy, WR Jordan Shipley, OT Adam Ulatoski and OG Charlie Tanner.

McCoy has signed an agreement with Cleveland’s Browns. The Cincinnati Bengals got Jordan Shipley in the 2010 NFL draft. Two team members has gone in as free agents in other teams. Houston signed a contract with Ulatoski and the New York Jets got Tanner.

To fill the gaps left behind by those players, this season’s fall camp is specifically directed towards training freshmen and sophomores so that the older players can be moved up to key positions that had been vacated by the mass exodus of their team members.

Despite the long odds they seem to face, coach Mack Brown is optimistic about the results of the forthcoming games. He cites the fact that in the 2008 season when the team which was reckoned to garner a 9-3 finish, they gave everyone the surprise of the year by nearly flattening out the competition with a 12-1 score. The year following, they upped that score one more point and earned the right to compete for the BCS National Championship trophy. They eventually lost but had already gained in the AP poll rankings. At the preseason tally for this year they are in slot #4.

Many critics say that rating is way too optimistic and exaggerated considering the ramshackle state in which the team finds itself this season. Optimistic or not, it certainly does a lot to increase their odds of getting a go at the championship again.

Coach Mack Brown doesn’t like to underestimate the power of belief. The fact that they had excellent expectations for themselves in their last games is important for him. said “When we weren’t expected by the public to win all the games and our players and coaches still expected to…”

Along the same line, there are many who claim that the Longhorns actually have a real chance of getting the trophy for this season. One reason cited is that the team will be facing its most important adversary, Texas A&M, towards the end when they will have had enough time and practice to be in top playing condition.

Additionally, game units have been undergoing rehabilitation. In doing so, players with talent have been fielded in key positions. For example, the back line now has Aaron Williams, Curtis Brown, Chyke Brown and Blake Gideon.

Sophomore Garrett Gilbert is plenty reason for expecting the best this season. He packs great talent and unusual determination in his game. After floundering in the first half of the last BCS championships he rallied himself up to almost achieve for the team the comeback they have always wanted.

Whatever the pundits say, they have their reasons for saying. While player count doesn’t necessarily add up to a winning game neither does pure talent and determination. The glaring fact is that coach Brown is in for many training sessions this year.
