Linebacker Dont’a Hightower

Part of his great success with the Alabama Crimson Tide is linebacker Hightower’s extreme adaptability and his knack for grasping situations quickly. During his stint under Coach Nick Saban, Hightower has learned to be versatile in his play. He is accustomed to play the many defense tactics of his coach, ranging to basic 3-4 defense to situational routines.

The coaching style of Saban is somewhat different from standard. He will not hesitate to reshuffle players as the situation demands, deploying some to jobs they may not like if he thinks the game outcome will be better for that. Because of that his players have to be very flexible and cooperative. They should not hesitate to learn new techniques and train for new positions if required to do so.

This season, Hightower inherits the job of middle linebacker from Rolando McClain. He is the signal-maker and he checks on his teammates. He assumes the stance of quarterback on defense if the team goes into the splitback formation. He becomes defensive end during pass-downs. In nickel defense, he watches out for his running backs, tight end and wide receivers.

On advantage that Hightower is his rushing speed. In covering from sideline to sideline he is even better than McClain. He speed in rushing a pass is amazing. For this reason, he makes a perfect team with a middle linebacker such as Chris Jordan or Nicko Johnson.

Coach Saban is sure that Hightower will not remain a signal-caller for his entire career but will assume other important positions. The experience will be good for him and for the team.

Quarterback Phillip Elly

He is currently the 15th in the nationwide ranking of quarterbacks. Elly recently made his commitment to play with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He had previously had offers from LSU, Wake Forrest, Clemson and Ole Miss and everyone was expecting he would go in with one of them. His move was unexpected in many quarters.

The offer from Alabama apparently was one of his more recent ones and seems to have been too good to resist. Alabama Crimson Tide is currently no. 1 in the polls of the USA Today and ESPN.com and that, according to Elly, was one of the reasons he picked the team over his other offers, saying, “You want to play for a program like that because they are the champions.”

Elly has his own winning numbers. As a starter, he had a score of 19-0 and so far has participated in two state championships. He scored 20 touchdowns in his junior season and covered a distance of 1,833 yards in the overall.

His training has been along the conventional style of offensive play. However, as a fan of the Tide, he has watched many of their games and has acquainted himself with their offensive techniques. He will require just a little more practice to actually perform well with them team on the field.

Coack Robert Weiner admires Elly’s attitude and the fact that his whole intention in playing football is not just for personal success but also, and perhaps, more importantly, for the satisfaction of becoming a member of a winning team like the Alabama Crimson Tide.
