The Detroit Lions nineteen game losing streak is over. On Sunday afternoon at Ford Field in Detroit the Lions held on for a 19-14 win over the Washington Redskins. The Lions hadn’t won a game since December 23, 2007 and had already tied the second longest losing streak in NFL history. Their run of futility included a 0-16 mark in 2008, the first winless season since the NFL expanded its schedule to sixteen games. It may not have been pretty, but the streak is now over and the Lions wont have to worry about comparisons to the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who lost a record 26 games in their first two seasons as an NFL expansion team.

The Cincinnati Bengals were able to withstand a last minute Green Bay Packers comeback bid, and held on to win their first game of the NFL regular season 31-24. The Packers last drive stalled on the Bengals ten yard line, the victim of a false start penalty in the waning seconds. Both Cincinnati and Denver evened their 2009 record at 1-1. Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco scored the eventual game winning points on a 13 yard pass from Carson Palmer.

The one thing that is for certain about college sports is that change often takes time. The NCAA’s Bowl Championship Series is one example of that. Since the founding of the BCSA system, preference in postseason BCS match ups had initially been given to what were (and still are) considered the major Conferences in college football – the SEC, Big Eight, Big Ten, Pac-10, and so on. As most fans of the game know, however, recent years have seen several teams from smaller conferences finally being given the attention they deserve by the BCS, with last year’s Texas Christian and Boise State teams being the best example of that trend. The true breakthrough for the BCS, however, began years before, beginning with the Utah Utes’ hiring of Urban Meyer for two seasons as Head Coach. Utah, a Mountain West Conference member, was not eligible for an automatic selection in a BCS game, and like other teams from the smaller conferences, had never been invited to play in one. Breaking that BCS wall would be one of Urban Meyer’s greatest accomplishments as coach.

For the New Orleans Saints, the Louisiana representative of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC), life in the National Football League (NFL) has been one long exercise in patience. Since their establishment as an expansion franchise in 1966, the Saints have been on an upward trajectory – but one with a very slight uphill grade. It took them more than ten years to manage a break-even season, and another decade beyond that to finally have their first season with more wins than defeats. They didn’t manage a playoff victory until the 2000 campaign. Saints fans have had to endure far more downs than ups over the last four decades as their team struggled to find its place in an NFL dominated by concepts of parity, but throughout it all, patience has been the byword.
