A 2014 Superbowl in New York sounds like a excellent concept……on paper. We should think about it for a minute. Excellent folks, wonderful town, excellent weather? Do People know how cold Winter is in New York? Typically the Superbowl is surrounded by outdoor Venues in the sunshine, concerts outside the stadium, barbecues in the parking lot, sports figures playing golf, and fans unwinding poolside while on holiday to watch the big game. New York is a superb metropolis but there are tremendous factors for having it in a warm weather location.

Despite the early struggles of starting QB Kerry Collins, who threw two interceptions, the Tennessee Titans managed to prevail over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday by a 27-20 score. The victory ran Tennessee’s record to 2-0 in the NFL preseason, while the Bucs dropped their first exhibition contest. The Titans rallied behind the play of backup QB Vince Young, who threw for 131 yards and the game winning touchdown.

Since playing their first football game in 1889, the University of Wisconsin Badgers football program has seen its share of ups and downs. With an overall record of 614 wins and 465 losses, the ups have outweighed the downs, to be sure, but when the program has been down it has been for an extended period of time. For example, after their 1901 season, Badger teams suffered through what could only be described as a 35 year period of utter mediocrity – with the one exception being the team’s 1912 undefeated season. Another thirty year period of poor performances and mediocre results occurred after the Badgers’ 1962 loss in the Rose Bowl. It would not be until Barry Alvarez arrived as the team’s head coach in 1990 that the program’s fortunes would begin to turn around.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have seemingly always been among the most elite of all college football programs. Their victories number in excess of 800 – only six other programs have achieved that mark – and they stand alone as the team with the most football victories of any in the NCAA over the last 50 years. With 119 season campaigns under their belt, they currently stand in fourth place among Division 1 football wins. They have also won a total of five national crowns. Three of those five titles have been achieved within the last 25 seasons, and involved teams coached by one of football’s most storied sideline generals: the great Tom Osborne, whose teams dominated the college game from 1973 through 1997.

USC has won their big game against Ohio State twice in back to back years. Its the next game they have problems with. Last year, USC went on the road and lost to Oregon State immediately after defeating the Buckeyes. This year, it was the Washington Huskies who pulled the upset. The Huskies defense shut down the powerful Trojans offense, and Erik Folk kicked a 22 yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to give Washington a 16-13 victory in Seattle. U

Football is a game which favors big and tough players; it requires lots of strength and endurance. Nonetheless, players need more than sheer physical size, strength and endurance to win football games. A player must also be quick on his feet and a good receiver if he wants to make the winning touchdown. If the players are not fast enough to outrun and outmaneuver their opponents, they are unlikely to win the game.

New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has been a crucial factor in the teams 2-0 start, showing a poise and head for the game very rare for NFL newcomers. Still, there wasn’t much worry at the revelation that hes suffering from tendinitis in his right knee. The Jets announced Sanchez’s injury on Thursday, and hes listed as probable on the official NFL injury report. Based on comments from the quarterback and team officials, the prognosis sounds more optimistic than that.

For the casual football fan whose experience with the college game may extend no farther than catching an occasional game with his buddies at the bar, Boise State’s Broncos football team can cause quite a bit of consternation. As members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), they first captured the attention of much of the nation in the 2006-07 campaign. That season saw the Broncos go undefeated with 13 wins, and then beat the mighty Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl game. For the last several seasons, the Broncos have remained one of the best – and perhaps underrated – teams in the country. Even though they managed another undefeated 14 victory season in 2009, they were never seriously considered for title contention. Oddly enough, though, for most casual fans the Boise State football’s team has not been the real attention-getter – it has been the fact that they play on a blue field!
