IOWA – One Of The Many Well Known Sports Teams

The baseball team in the University of Northern Iowa was known to have taken part in the NCCA Division I tournament. The team which was then based in Cedar Falls, Iowa, was known as the Northern Iowa Panthers. The Baseball team is no more however, due to the University of Northern Iowa discontinuing the program starting from this year.

Rick Heller held the position of Head Coach of the team nick named Panthers, for a period of ten years. They had a home stadium which was capable of taking in 4277 fans and spectators and was called the Waterloo Riverfront Stadium. With their being no more baseball at university level, the focus now shifts to the minor league teams.

Iowa is known to have four Class A teams in the Midwest league. The teams are Burlington Bees, Cedar Rapids Kernels, Clinton LumberKings and Quad Cities River Bandits. Even though this league is not followed as some of the others, it is one that has not been behind in generating stars that have made it to professional level. We are going to take a look at some of the players that have made it to major league through the minor league teams.

Born in Texas on 23rd September 1985, Kenn Anthony Kasperk was invited to join the Chicago Cubs in 2004 when he was quite young, which was turned down by him. Neither did he accept a draft contract from the Washington Nationals in 2007.

It wasn’t until he got an offer from Seattle Mariners that he decided to take up the offer. He was drafted in the 12th round during the Major League Baseball Draft, 2008. Being quite early in his career, Kenn has been able to make quite an impact in the Seattle Mariners.

Many are of the view that Kenn, being young and with many years of playing lying ahead of him, with his prowess in right handed batting and bowling will be a force to reckon with in the future.

Another player of similar nature is Denny Almonte. Denny was born on September 24th, 1988 in Miami Florida. Even though he was younger than Kenn, he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft. Denny was able to work on his game while playing little league during his school years.

Before long Denny got noticed when he tried to play a more challenging game at national level while his right handed throw and batting switcher had him ear marked by most other teams as well. If he continues to progress well, there is a very good chance that many other teams will try to draft him.

Jerry Nyman was the famous coach that used to train players in the Midwest League for a number of years. Before starting to coach, Jerry was famously known to play a bit of ball himself when he was initially signed by the Chicago White Sox.
