Can The Atlanta Falcons Compete With The Saints?

After a great finish to the 2008 season, the Falcons were the toast of the NFL. Coming off of a few losing seasons, the team was revitalized, thanks in large part to three people.

Matt Ryan, for one, was a more than competent rookie quarterback, and lived up to the hype cast upon any number one draft pick. Roddy White was a third year wide receiver who was continually improving his trade, and finally had the breakout season that so many had predicted. Additionally, the critical signing of Michael Turner gave a huge boost to this team’s offense. Turner was one of the best running backs in football last season, besting 1700 yards and 1700 touchdowns. This didn’t surprise me much, since he was coming from San Diego, where he learned from Ladainian Tomlinson.

The Atlanta Falcons have the benefit of playing in the NFC South – that should create easy wins for them over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Falcons face some tough opponents in the New York Jets, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints twice – these teams should provide the Falcons with a good test to see where they stand amongst the NFL elite. With no clear cut favorite to come out the NFC – the Falcons could be the “dark horse” of the NFC.

The Falcons acquired future Hall of Famer TE Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs for practically nothing. With a professional like Gonzalez on the Falcons – this can only increase Matt Ryan’s confidence and help him improve overall as a quarterback in the NFL.

The Falcons are in the NFC South – which in 08′ was the most competitive division in all of football. In 09′, the division isn’t as good with the Carolina Panthers struggling and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the process of rebuilding. The team the Falcons will have to be concerned with is the New Orleans Saints and their overwhelming offense that can strike at any time.

The Falcons were great at home in 2008, but struggled on the road. Secondly, a very tough opponent in the New England Patriots (you can be sure they’ll be looking to make a statement after losing to the Jets) will bring out a very tough opponent determined to test the grit of this team.
